Back pain affects approximately four out of five adults in their lifetime, often interfering with work and other routine activities. Back pain affects men and women equally, usually beginning between the ages of 40 and 60.

The spinal column is composed of vertebrae held together by ligaments and separated by discs. Normal aging causes the fluid that cushions the discs to dry up making them more brittle. In addition, there is also less protection for the vertebrae.

Normal wear and tear of routine activities can make vertebrae unstable and put pressure on nerves that enter and exit the spinal column to control movement and sensation of the arms and legs. This process can cause numbness and tingling in the arms and legs, which we refer to as nerve pain.

Heavy physical labor can speed up this process, and lack of physical activity allows muscles to weaken, which both mean less protection for the spinal column. Physically demanding activities and overexertion can result in a painful strain of your muscles or ligaments.

Excessive strain can cause disc herniation, where the disc bulges and may put pressure on the nerve roots. Some symptoms warrant immediate medical attention including loss of control of bathroom function, profound weakness or sensory loss.
